YD’s voice, MYF Sunday

The World Around

We live in a postmodern culture where there is no commonly held standard of right and wrong. This attitude increasingly affects youths, even those who profess faith in Christ.

The waves of information technology age, have influenced our culture badly. Whether we like it or not, the knowledge we have obtained or continue to obtain, controls our beliefs, values and feelings. Many youths have been led astray. In their minds, there’s nothing wrong with being a Christian and continuing to do immoral things. At present we find more and more youths caught up in struggles, such as drinking and smoking. We have to combat against these postmodernism values.

Church

Daug Fields said in his book Purpose Driven youth Ministry, “Imagine a sports dynasty for a minute, and pick your favourite. Its success can’t be attributed to any one component; several factors combine to produce success. A true dynasty is stronger than its one great player. It must also have supportive key players, a motivating head coach, experienced assistant coaches, a position in the free agency market, a risk-taking owner, a productive front office and a strong farming system. Average sports fans don’t consider all of these factors when they watch their favourite team play. Instead they focus on the team’s best player and falsely assume that the teams’ success is due to that one great player.”

Daug’s finding gives us a similar picture for our churches. Sadly, many in the church view the youth ministry with the same mentality. We look for that one great player (the pastor) who can save the youth ministry that will attract the youths to stay on in church. A healthy youth ministry is built on a strong leadership of adult volunteers who express their passion by caring and taking time from their busy lives to build relationships with youths and help them to grow in their faith.

Parents

MYF has been a platform for youths to strengthen their faith in Jesus and a source of encouragement to them to live godly lives. I belief that parents who have trusted God and sent their children, with prayers to MYF, are truly blessed. Many Christian parents are playing defence with their children when they ought to be playing offense. Playing defence means hoping your children won’t smoke, won’t drink, won’t do drugs, and won’t get into trouble. As good as that is, that’s too low a goal for Christian parents. We ought to raise our children to play offense – to learn how to change the world for Jesus Christ.

Sometimes our dreams for our children are too small. We want them to get an education, find a career, settle down and marry a good person. That’s not enough. Do you want your children to serve the Lord? It won’t happen by accident. You must sharpen them like arrows and aim them in the right direction.

Youths

TAC-MYF youths, remember that you are handpicked by God to be His arrows. God has great plans for you. Arrows are not meant to be kept safe in the quiver. He wants you to eventually release that arrow to make an impact in the world with the love of Christ.

As we celebrate MYF Sunday on 19th July 2009, let us be grateful to God for the MYF he has designed in our churches. Pray that God will continue to inspire our young to think differently and move strategically.

Have a Blessed MYF Sunday. May our youth fellowship continue to be God’s arrows in Malaysia.

May our good Lord continue to bless and lead us to greater heights.

Soli Deo Gloria,
